The ramblings of web developer Beau Brownlee

"I don’t know how in the world you can sit in front of a computer screen and stare at weird words and symbols all day!" is a question I’ve heard many a time from many a friend. It can, and is, mentally exhausting after a few hours. And of course then there are deadline days; crunch time; The day which all the work is due all at the same time and you have to stay till 6 AM (whew). So how do we just sit and type syntax all day?

There are many answers to that question, but the one I want to focus on now is music. Every programmer has music that is stimulating and helps them cope with the long hours of tedious work. I’ve never seen a programmer without his trusty headphones and a good old energy drink. So what kind of music is the best to program too? The answer is whatever music you like the most. The key is for the music to be stimulating but not distracting. Typically rhythmic music that is somewhat repetitive and not alot of vocals as the mind tends to focus on vocal music. Also variety is a key factor. Listen to the same genre too long and it starts to drag your mind down even more.

Here are a few songs that I have in my ‘programming playlist’:

A great place to start is "Hackers" movie soundtrack

Hackers
Hackers 2
Hackers 3

Another good soundtrack I like is The Matrix

Another cool group of music is DJ Boo

So whats your favorite music to listen too while programming? Post them up in comments and let us all know!
